  1. In Alberta, drivers have the right to refuse unsolicited towing and choose their own towing company. New provincial rules from August 2025 prohibit tow trucks from soliciting at collision scenes unless called by a driver or law enforcement and establish a 200-meter exclusion zone. Key terms include the right to refuse towing, choose your own provider, access your vehicle during storage facility business hours, and be informed of your rights without pressure.

  2. Your rights and key rules

  3. Refuse unsolicited towing: You have the right to refuse any tow truck that arrives without being called by you or the police.

  4. Choose your provider: You have the right to choose which company tows your vehicle, and you can decide where it is taken (unless police instruct otherwise).

  5. Exclusion zone: A 200-meter exclusion zone is in place around collision scenes. Tow truck operators must not solicit services within this zone unless specifically called by authorized personnel.

  6. Accessing your vehicle: You have the right to access your vehicle to retrieve personal items during the storage facility's normal business hours.

  7. Information and pressure: You should be clearly informed of your rights and not be pressured into accepting towing services at a stressful moment.

  8. Important considerations for specific services

  9. AMA members: If you are an AMA member, specific towing coverage distances apply (e.g., Basic: 5 KM, Plus: 160 KM, Premier: 320 KM). For tows exceeding your coverage, you will pay for the extra mileage at a set rate.

  10. Convenience tows: These are for eligible passenger vehicles and motorcycles and cover a maximum of 50 km. They are not for RVs, motorhomes, or trailers.

  11. Commercial and heavy transport: There are specific regulations for commercial vehicles, including requirements for escort vehicles, equipment, and securing cargo.

  12. In-transit permits: If you need to move an unregistered vehicle for repairs, you must get an in-transit permit and keep a copy of it in the vehicle at all times.
